Based on feedback from reliable Mac experts, we strongly recommend using the FileVault2 full disk encryption that is part of Lion and Mountain Lion Mac OS versions.  We do not advocate using other third party encryption technologies, as there have been numerous reports of problems arising when new updates are issued by Apple for the operating system.

Q:  Does this mean I need to upgrade my Macintosh to Lion or Mountain Lion?

A:  Yes, if you're using an earlier version of the Mac OSX operating system, we recommend upgrading to Lion or Mountain Lion in order to enable full-disk encryption.   Here is Apple's  link to upgrading to Mountain Lion:  http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/

Q:  How do I tell what version my Mac is using?

A:  Click on the Apple menu, and select "About this Mac"  It will have a version number listed, such as "10.6.3"

Here's a list of the major Macintosh "OSX" versions:

10.0 = "Cheetah"

10.1 = "Puma"

10.2 = "Jaguar"

10.3 = "Panther"

10.4 = "Tiger"

10.5 = "Leopard"

10.6 = "Snow Leopard"

10.7 = "Lion"

10.8 = "Mountain Lion"

Q:  What if my Mac doesn't support upgrading to Lion or Mountain Lion?

A:  We don't really have a good answer here, to be honest.  You may need to purchase a new system, either Mac or Windows PC.  (You may be able to get your manager or P.I. to fund getting an organization-owned system.)
