Somatic genetic testing is also called tumor genomic profiling. Tumor genomic profiling utilizes next-generation sequencing to analyze the molecular genetic profile of a tumor with the goal of identifying variants that can be targeted for cancer treatment. Disease causing (pathogenic) variants identified in the tumor DNA can allow providers to utilize nontraditional approaches to treatment based on the tumor's molecular profile. Tumor genomic profiling is usually treatment driven, and is traditionally done for more advanced or metastatic cancers. When somatic variants are identified, there is not risk to other family members nor is there a risk that the patient may be at increased risk for second cancers.
